The Love rocks project
A Blank Slate
When our collaboration with Sasha Bruce Youthwork began, we recruited volunteers to rehabilitate the grounds of Sasha Bruce House. Years of deferred maintenance to focus on the struggle against youth homelessness had resulted in a somewhat foreboding appearance. Clearing overgrowth made the property more hospitable.
Sprucing the Bruce
Volunteers planted flowering perennials and shrubs to add some color to the sprawling slopes on both sides of the steps to the entrance. Attractive, but not yet welcoming.
Art that Speaks
Large expanses needed to be filled with color. Various art projects were discussed until we came up with the idea to paint river rocks with colorful symbols and words of encouragement and support for those who came to Sasha Bruce House seeking refuge.
A Snowy Start
We began by asking young people at a nearby elementary school to paint rocks for the garden. They came on an inclement January day to place them.
A Project for All
We found that the Love Rocks Project has universal appeal. Young people, office workers and corporate sponsors have conducted painting sessions and produced thousands of messages of love and caring.
