With ominous forecasts of snow and temperatures dropping into the teens, it's hard to imagine that Spring is just a few weeks away. However, it will not be long before each of the 4,000 daffodil, tulip and Asian lily bulbs planted by our volunteers in 2020, the last of which went into the ground on December 23 send their shoots up through the soil in search of the sun.
A bright spot amidst the wintry gloom has been a mention of Guerrilla Gardeners of Washington DC in a recent Washington Post article:
Going Out Guide: Start the year off fresh with one of these outdoor cleanup activities
As days get a little longer and warmer, we’ll be rallying volunteers to begin cleaning up our stewardship projects in preparation for this season’s blooms and some new arrivals. In the Potomac Triangle Parks, we’ll be planting Black-eyed Susans among the Nandina in the I Street Park as well as installing a shade garden in the K Street Park featuring Rhododendron, Azalea, Camellia, Astilbe, Coral Bell and Hosta.
But while the cold winds swirl about, we're planning events for our established projects and considering new endeavors. We'll have some exciting announcements to share once we've secured funding for all that we hope to accomplish this year.
Fundraising occupies much of our off-season in order to make sure we have the resources to support the work of our volunteers throughout the year. Our current focus is on Donor Advised Funds (DAF). Quite a few individuals and companies conduct their philanthropy through this vehicle administered by their financial institutions. For a small nonprofit like Guerrilla Gardeners of Washington DC, getting our organization in front of these donors and fund managers is a challenging task, so spreading the word is essential.
We never ask our volunteers to donate, though some do. However, it would be helpful for everyone to share information about our work, especially with those who might have DAFs or manage them for clients. Key attributes of Guerrilla Gardeners of Washington DC besides the work we do is that we are a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit and contributions are 100% tax deductible. No one receives compensation of any kind for work performed for Guerrilla Gardeners of Washington DC. Virtually every dollar goes into the ground.
